This work was created during my tenure accompanying dance classes at the Idyllwild Arts Academy in the late '80s/early '90s. I owe a debt of gratitude to the wonderful teachers and students there — especially dance instructors Diana MacNeil and Jean-Marie Martz, and orchestra conductor Jung Ho Pak — for inspiring and encouraging me in the creation of this piece — along with other work composed during that period.
Each afternoon I would improvise music for ballet and modern dance classes; if a theme seemed good, I would jot it down. Some of those themes ended up in this symphony.
